How Compression-Seal air stems function:

No sealant is ever required. The compressional force applied by tightening the nut, squeezes the rubber washer against the seal, providing a strong seal to properly inflate the seal.

1) The air stem base is inserted into the seal

2) The correct washer position is bevel down – so the washer bevel mates with the base shape

3) The first nut is tightened, compressing the rubber washer and rubber seal together

4) The compressed rubber provides an air tight seal

5) Insert the air stem through the 13mm (1/2″) lid hole. Then tighten the second nut to secure it in place. A step drill bit (available at most hardware stores) can be used to enlarge the lid hole if required.

5) Using two people to insert the seal by pressing into the lid channel in BOTH directions at the same time – working evenly away from the air stem – finishing on the opposite side of the lid from the air stem. This ensures the stem is not pulled to one side or the other. The seal should fit lightly snug, without have to stretch too far. A snug fit ensures the seal does not “flip” out when lowering or raising the lid
